LIFE COACH AND AUTHOR OF YOU ARE A BADASS: HOW TO STOP DOUBTING YOUR GREATNESS AND START LIVING AN AWESOME LIFE
There is currently a huge appetite for a full spectrum of nail art. Yet regardless of what’s currently trending, would you believe us if we said that Pink and Whites are the essential and unsung hero of your nail business? Unforgiving and notoriously difficult to execute, Pink and Whites, or variations with a smile line, are what separate you from the pack. We often talk about working smarter not harder...we’re looking at you ombre nails created by airbrush. But when it comes to Pink and Whites we hold the opposite line; it’s truly worth all the struggle and you should remember to upcharge for the labor of love. A perfect set of Pink and Whites is like a superpower. If you can master this technique; you can basically take on the world!
NOT A 90s NAIL DINOSAUR
Across the board in gel and acrylic, you’re going to want to be able to produce beautiful Pink and White nails. We believe in the transformational power of the technique to such a degree that there’s an entire day devoted to it at our YN OWC (One Week Course). It happens on Day 2. Is there some push back from the nail techs in attendance? Yes, there is very little interest and a ton of resistance. People arrive and want to avoid Pink and Whites like the plague. Imagine what happens when you spend a day sculpting Pink and Whites over and over and over. You learn to tame the beast; for nail techs that means product control! Sure Pink and Whites may not be the hottest trend right this minute; but designs with smile lines always have a way of being reborn into cool nail styling. What’s old is new again like the single ring finger smile line that’s currently catching people’s attention. Glitter smile lines definitely make a statement.
NO LIMITS
When you learn to do perfect Pink and Whites, the training wheels comes off and more thrilling detailed possibilities are yours for the taking. Trust us when we say even the more complicated and colorful nail art techniques become more intuitive. Things will fall into place and increasingly easier (almost second nature) when you get Pink and Whites down. Don’t worry, you won’t be bound to the odd relic Pink and White client. Instead you’re now capable of delivering every smile line nail design with confidence. Traditional Pink and White applications are considerably problematic with unwanted shadow lines or pit/pepper marks. These are the result of working with white that is too wet. With the reverse technique, you learn how to lay in your pink (beige or nude) with sharp and predictable control. The key to doing the details required with Pink and Whites is understanding how to work in a clay consistency. With Pink first, it becomes easy to locate and fill the upper arch; then fine tune the smile when you push the White up to meet the Pink. It also makes a huge difference in the structure of the nail. It’s like learning how to balance when you ride a bike. First you need the right momentum. Next, stop looking down at your feet while you pedal. Then finally, set your eyes on the path in front of you. Riding can be explained and demonstrated, but when you experience it for yourself. There is an almost immediate sense of mastery.
WHAT WOULD YOU ATTEMPT IF YOU KNEW YOU COULDN’T FAIL?
We would recommend attempting and mastering your Pink and Whites. Even if you’ve built a full clientele without it thus far. There really is nothing to lose when you try to get more comfortable with a skill that used to make you uncomfortable. Be fearless in the face of Pink and Whites. Make space to practice every day and find your talent a tiny bit better than you were the day before. It adds up. Share your progress with us. #YNPinkandwhites
